Chapter 19
Over a light dinner Mr. Collins gave Mrs. Bennet and the girls an extensive talk about the history of Rosings Park. âHave I told you about the type of wood Lady Catherineâs cupboards are made from?â
He was met with a resentful silence from the Bennet sisters, apart from Mary who found the talk invigorating.
âPlease do,â Mrs. Bennet prompted. âI have already inspected the grand cupboards in the house.â
âYou have,â Mr. Collins replied with glee. âArenât you enthralled by the elegance and the space?â
âI have never seen such opulent cupboards,â she gestured with her hands.
He noticed the glum faces on her daughters. âOne day my dear cousins will appreciate the illustrious history of Rosings Park.â
âI certainly do,â Mary announced. âWhat do you think, Mama?â
Mrs. Bennet glared at the rest of her daughters. âI believe your talk has rendered them speechless.â
Lydia rolled her eyes at Kitty. They had endured two hours of laborious details concerning the latest fixture and fittings to the house. This includedâthe number of windows and fireplaces in Rosings Park, followed by a short history of elaborate designs that covered ornate ceilings, door panels and floorboardsâof every description.
Lydia wished she could escape and go outside. Some of the officers had set up a jostling contest upon horse back. The event would take place this afternoon, in a small clearing in the woods.
It was not a grand affair that involved knights in armor, but a contest that would test an officerâs skill with a sword on horseback. The officer who sliced the most pumpkins on a pole at high speed would be awarded a substantial wager.
Lydia could not stand Collinsâs suffocating talk any longer.
